Lev Kulakovskii (1897-1989) was a Soviet musicologist, a music teacher, and an expert of folklore. He received his education at Kyiv University, at the local Technicum and at the O. Lysenko Academy for Music and Drama (1924-1927). In 1930 he became a collaborator of the Institute of Art history, Moscow. He wrote for the journals “Muzykal’noe obrazovanie”, “Sovetskaia muzyka” and “Sovetskaia etnografiia”. In the years 1938-1956 participated in many musical and folklore expeditions to the regions of Briansk, Vladimir, Orel, Pskov, Riazan’, and Iaroslavl’. He authored many books on the theory of music education, compiled the collection Russian, Ukrainian and Belarusian Songs (Moscow, 1937), and wrote numerous articles on music folklore, pedagogy, the theory of modal rhythm, and aesthetics.
