Leonid Sabaneev (1881-1968) was a composer and music critic. He studied Maths and Natural Sciences at Moscow University. He also studied piano with Nikolai Zverev, music theory and composition with Sergei Taneev and orchestration with Rimskii-Korsakov at the city Conservatoire. From 1906 he devoted himself to composition, musicology, and music criticism, working for the editorial offices of numerous periodicals in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and abroad, later – for the editorial offices of “Pravda” and “Izvestiia”. After 1920, he directed the National Institute of Musicology in Moscow (which he founded) and the Music Sector of the Academy of Fine Arts. Having emigrated in 1926, he lived first in Germany, Paris, London, and New York, finally settled in France. His activity at various Soviet musical institutions (among others the Association of Contemporary Music) was marked by positive cultural openness. He also composed a limited number or ballets, cantatas, instrumental and vocal chamber music.
